I’ve come a long way from being shocked about the de-stimgatization of blow jobs among pre-teens, but I don’t know if I’d have the cojones to stand up in front of a bar/bat mitzvah class and kibbitz about it.
But Rabbi Marc Gellman does, and that’s why he gets his own column in Newsweek.
Great quote!
“The woman came out of a mans rib: Not from his feet to be walked on. Not from his head to be superior, but from the side to be equal. Under the arm to be protected, and next to the heart to be loved”
Yo, Yenta! I know you probably heard of that story many Kabbalah folks mention of the infamous character from Genesis named Lilith… arguably the world’s first femenist. Sometimes it feels like the good books are a bit misogynistic with Eve being a derivative of Adam. WOrd is that Lilith came from the earth just like Adam and wanted to be equal. Rabbi Gellman’s interpretation also places women on equal footing with men using the conventional story of creation. Wish everyone would see it that way, we’d have more peace and equality among the sexes.
There’s some interesting (and admittedly, some stupid) discussion of Gelman’s article over at Jewlicious.com, in case you’re interested…
