My mother’s always been a real knockout and loves to get farpitzed (fancied-up) even to walk the eighteen feet down the driveway to the mailbox. Since the whole make-up gene seems to have skipped a generation (and apparently landed on my son, who won’t let me trim his nails unless I paint them red, but that’s a different post), she’s always after me to glam it up a little. When she comes to visit and we take the kids to play in the mud at the playground, she says to me, “You couldn’t wear a little lipstick?”
The truth is, I’ve tried. I apply the eyeshadow, I look like someone socked me with a bag of oranges. I try to line my lips with pencil and fill them in, I come out like the pill lady from Saturday Night Live. I just don’t have the skills.
But here comes Tamara Gold gorgeous Jewess, professional make-up artist and the voice of The Red Lipstick Report. I think she just might be able to help me.
Her instruction on foundation was very helpful this month; I tend to goop myself up so badly I appear to have the kind of skin torn off in horror movies.
“Makeup isn’t brain surgery. It’s another form of creative expression,” Tamara writes on her site.
Oy, that’s my problem, Tammy! I get so creative I look I either end up looking like a drag queen or as if Jackson Pollack got whacked on heroin and went off on my face.
I’m looking forward to learning more, and perhaps, one day, my mother won’t be ashamed to be seen with me.
You should put a picture of yourself in the about page or something so we can take a good look at you. I predict that you don’t need any makeup after all, natural beauty is unmatched in my opinion.
Joe, just stop with the flattery. I’ll be wrangling a new photo of myself soon so my extremely capable and talented tech guy can paste it up.
That Tammy Gold has a nice pic on her about page!
Jessica – I know I’m not your fave respondent – But since I’m all for beauty amongst my sisters… The easiest, no fuss, healthiest makeup – and hardest to screw-up- is the powder foundations by “Bare Minerals”. There are other brands coming out now too. I first tried it when I saw the esthetician at my dermatologist’s office use it. I worked my way through grad-school doing makeup for weddings and photographers – Like your mom (and mine too), I won’t venture down the driveway without my face done. I’ve found that Bare Minerals makeup doesn’t irritate or cause break-outs, stays on all day, looks completely natural even close up, and washes off easily at night. The downside is that it’s harder to find. Give it a try, though. Perfect for “natural beauties”.
Thanks, Perri, I’ll give it a try. Any tips on where to find it?
Yes – You can get it online – the company name is Bare Escentuals. There are Bare Escentuals retail stores – which ought to be on their website. Also, a lot of the “Med-Spa” places use it, or something like it. I have rosascia and sun-damage – Even up close, you can’t tell – Doesn’t even look like make-up. Let me know how you like it if you do try it.
Joe is right… The Head Yenta doesn’t “need” makeup…
